Spectator Vantage Points

There are many places to watch the Hawaiian Airlines Liberty Challenge hosted by New York Outrigger on Saturday, June 22, 2013. Come up close as the outrigger canoes launch at Pier 26 in Hudson River Park or visit any one of our official viewing stations located around the course. The race occurs on most of New York and New Jersey’s waterways providing excellent viewing opportunities of the race in progress from the shore.

Below is a list of prime vantage points and approximate times when you can support your favorite teams as they pass by.

Manhattan | Hoboken | Jersey City | National Parks of New York Harbor | Brooklyn


Manhattan, New York

South Street Seaport Located closest to the start of the race, spectators at the end of Pier 17 at South Street Seaport can catch the crews jockeying for position soon after the starting horn.

  • Women’s Race: 8:00AM-8:30AM
  • Men’s Race: 11:30AM-12:00AM
  • Mixed Race: 2:30PM to 3:00PM
Battery Park City Parks As the crews round the Battery to head up the Hudson River, Battery Park provides many areas along the seawall to get closest to the action. The best areas include Historic Battery Park, Robert F. Wagner Jr. Park, The Esplanade and Nelson A. Rockefeller Park. You will be able to hear the crews call their changes as they settle into their race pace.

  • Men’s Race: 11:45AM-12:15AM
  • Mixed Race: 2:45PM to 3:15PM
Hudson River Parks The Women and Men’s Crews continue up the Manhattan side of the Hudson River passing by the Hudson River Park. The Mixed Crews turn west to cross the river towards Jersey City, New Jersey. The best areas to cheer the crews on are at the ends of Piers 25, 40 and 45. Visit our official Viewing Station at Pier 25.

  • Mixed Race: 3:00PM to 3:30PM
Chelsea Piers The Women and Men’s Crews will prepare for the turn to New Jersey as they pass by Chelsea Piers. Best views are at the end of Piers 59, 60 and 61.

  • Men’s Race: 12:15PM-12:45PM
Pier 66 You will have direct views of the Women and Men’s Crews as they make their turn to New Jersey at Pier 62, 64 and 66 in Hudson River Park. Visit our official Viewing Station at Pier 62.

Hoboken, New Jersey

Hoboken Parks If you are at the end of Shipyard Park (14th Street Pier), part of the Hoboken Parks system, you will see the Women and Men’s Crews charging toward you as they cut across the Hudson River from Manhattan. There are excellent viewing spots along the waters of Sinatra Park and Pier A to watch the crews heading back down the Hudson along the New Jersey riverfront.

Jersey City, New Jersey

harborside financial center All crews will have reached the half way mark of the race by the time they get to Harborside Financial Center. Located near Exchange Place, the best vantage point is at end of the Hyatt Regency Pier.

Liberty State Park It’s all mental for the crews once they reachLiberty State Park. Line up at the end of the promenade by the Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal to support the crews as they make the push towards the Statue of Liberty.

National Parks of New York Harbor

National Parks of New York Harbor The race course pulls away from the bustling urban shores and heads towards the quieter islands that make up the National Parks of New York Harbor. Crews will appreciate the breaks in silence as you cheer them on at Ellis Island as they race towards the centerpiece of this competition, The Statue of Liberty. Crews will turn to head across New York Harbor back towards Brooklyn. Show your support from Governor’s Island as they go through the Buttermilk Channel.

  • Mixed Race: 3:45PM-4:30PM

Brooklyn

Brooklyn Bridge Park It’s the final stretch. Welcome the crews back to the hustle of the city as they come through Buttermilk Channel towards the waterfront promenade and Granite Overlook along Pier 1 of Brooklyn Bridge Park. The crews cross under the Brooklyn Bridge to the finish buoy in front of The Cove where you can congratulate them on completion of the race.
